front end alignment quesion (have to replace big rod?) 700 1992

Car is a 1992 740. (pretty much a 940 with the 740 rear half)

I smacked a big pothole at 70mph on a Louisiana freeway (worst potholes in the nation), with the passenger (right) side of the car.

The car now pulls to the right, but does not shimmy or vibrate at all).

I took it to a local alignment shop.

The shop says that there is this large steel tube, about a foot and a half long, that goes from the A-arm back towards the rear at an angle inward slightly towards the center of the car, and that it needs to be replaced. He says that it needs to be 3 milimeters longer, as the front wheel is pushed back towards the rear wheel and this is the only way to reset it. Cost for the job will be $300.

Shop says that the tires will not wear if I just leave everything where it is, just that the car will always pull.

Does this sound correct, and is this the normal procedure to fix the problem, as opposed to say, i dunno, going to a frame shop and having something unbent?

I can rebuild an engine in a weekend, but I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to doing anything on a front end except for replacing worn joints & setting toe well enough to get to an alignment shop.

I don't really care about the cost, I just want to make sure the shop is using the correct procedure to fix this. Anyone? Help. (!)
