I'm driving my 144 yesterday and all of a sudden I smell something burning and the car starts pulling to the right. I stop the car and realize there's nothing wrong with the tires, it's the brakes, the right front caliper got stuck/froze. I drove the car another 1/2 mile to a Tire/Brake shop (by this time, there was smoke coming from the right front wheel). The mechanic looked at it and said the caliper is shot, and he recommends replacing both front ones, & rotors (the right rotor is probably warped now) and pads. He said it's going to be about $500. I left the car with him and he tried to order aftermarket calipers (it was a saturday, the dealer was closed), but the ones he got didn't fit. Now he said he's going to wait til Monday and try and get the parts at the dealer, if he can.
Can these parts (calipers, rotors, etc.) be found at the dealer for a 1970 144? Is there a better place to get them (cheaper and fast)? What should the price be for a job like this ($500 seems expensive to me)? Meanwhile, I've got a parts car sitting in my garage with perfectly good calipers (90k on them). Do you think I should just pull those off and give them to the mechanic? I'd do the work myself, but I just don't have the time and I've been sick lately (and it's 30 degrees outside). I just don't want to get ripped off here.
