120mph speedo-really??

Volvo started putting 120mph speedos in the 240 in, I think, 1983 or 84.
But can the vehicle, given enough space and time, actually accelerate to 120?
With the 3.31 rear end and a manual trans, the engine would be turning about 4500rpm at 120. My b230f has no problem reving this high in the lower gears, so it is theoretically possible. But does it really make enough power and torque to move a 3200 lbs. station wagon that fast?

I would ASSuME that Volvo put a 120 speedo in there for good reason, but maybe it's just a psychological trick.
