i have an electrical problem plees help 200 1980

ok here is the deal i was driving home in my car a 1980 244 GL and i turned a corner and my car and everything else electrical just died then i was looking under the hood and on the negative battery post there are two wires a thick on and then there is a thin one that is melted to crap and when ever i touch that wire to metal it sparks like crazy so i don't know where that wire goes and if that is my problem so plees get back to me thanks!
