Its the cable, Paul. Notice how it doesn't push out as hard as you have to push in? Simple friction, my friend. Pull the cable out and work some thin penetrating oil with graphite into it. You will be amazed at the difference. Maybe your favorite manufacturer of lube products has something equivalent. Sometimes just solvent will disolve enough old crud to make them free up. I just did a $250 cable control on my other maintenance hobby with the penetrating oil and graphite. It now works great.
