Main fuel pump dies in the Varmint's car 700 87

My son has a 1987 744T and my wife and I both have 745Ts, a 1986 and a 1987. I keep a few spare parts around to keep the fleet going. The Varmint went skiing today, and on the way home his car quit. He found a phone and called. I loaded up an extra distributor, turbo hoses, etc., and drove off to retrieve him. The car had spark, but no fuel came out of the supply or return lines, and I couldn't hear the main pump running. The relay was good. We came home and then returned with a fuel pump which I changed out on the spot. The Varmint needs to learn how to do these things himself, but at night along side the highway laying on wet asphalt is not a good place to learn. The car ran fine with its replacement fuel pump. The original pump had just under 180,000 miles. The biggest problem was getting the banjo fitting on the output side of the filter loose with the tools I had with me.
