intermittent heat 200 1983

Hi,

Subject is a 1983 245. The heat became flakey today. We had fine and dandy heat. Unloaded the groceries while letting the car idle. Jumped back in to go to dinner and NO heat although the fan motor was working as evindenced by the vast amounts of not hot air coming out of the vents. After a fine meal we came out an hour later and fired up the car and instantly had heat. Went to the video store and let the car idle and the heat vanished again.

This marks one of the few times when we could have taken the 1967 VW bus and had better heating :)

Any ideas as to the cause of the odd behavior? I assume the heater core is good based on the concept that it is a pass/fail item. Could it be the control switch or the door? Someone please tel me I can fix this without yanking the dash :)
