My car is haunted, weird connection gas gauge and odometer. 700 1989

Last week I replaced my intank pump. To day when the gas tank was almost empty, the odometer and the gas gauge stop working. As I filled it up with gas they started ticking away again. Does any one have any experience of a haunted odometer? What connection do they have other than celestial?
