heater fan blows fuses when turned on??? 200 76

If any one can help it is greatly appreciated.

Recently in my 76' 244DL i smelled a strange odour when i turned the heater fan on. only later finding out it was a burning fuse, i replaced the fuse and checked the fan again, no luck. I asked a mechanic who said it was the motor, but it is worth (australian)$5-700. for a replacement unit. please help, i would like to fix this soon as it is freezing down here this time of year. JOEL, Down Under.
