Are you sure it is not your starter motor?

Check the insulation on the small wire to the solonoid.

(There are two heavy wires and one small wire.)

I am currently replacing a starter on an 87 which would engage while my daughter was driving down the street, make loud noise for a minute, and then disengage. We lived with the problem for a few days and ended up paying Napa $100 for a new starter motor.
