Engine stops when braking 700 1988

HI guys!

I got a 1988 volvo 740 gle n/a and even with some 240,000 miles, it can still be pretty fast (for a volvo, anyways) However, the car has this one annoying problem: When stopping at a traffic light or stop sign or whatever...the engine just stops and i would have to throw it in park, start the car, then continue again. Not only is this annoying, it is also very dangerous, as its sudden and unexpected stopping of the engine can get me rear-ended. What can be causing this? Can you guys offer more than one possible solution? becaues i doubt it is only the idle level...

thanks people

-Greg
