BTDT. The 1983 244 B23 is a cable-driven speedometer/odometer system unless severly modified. If you get a speedo reading and the odo is not changing, the problem is in the odo drive gears. As I recall a plastic gear begins slipping on a steel shaft, the gear cracks or something.

I swapped the whole unit with one from a boneyard for my fix. You may be able to get in there and fix the gear problem.
