automatic shifter shroud replacement. 200 1983

i need help,i have a completely destroyed automatic shifter shroud, and was given a new one with no explanation of how to install it. my best guess is to remove the shifter knob and to slide it over the shaft,but no luck,is there a neat trick to getting this damn thing on that i havent thought of? by the way, it's a canadian built automatic,with no overdrive,if that changes anything. please help, i feel so stoopid!!!
