Touchy ABS sensor 700 1988

My rear ABS sensor kicks back at low speeds. My mechanic was reluctant (or too busy) to troubleshoot it because he said it looked improperly fitted. If I pull it out to look at it am I going to be dripping in fluid from the diff? Has anyone taken it out and cleaned the sensor to get it to work. I have cleaned the front sensors to good effect. I would not mind doing away with the ABS entirely but the sensor is connected to the odometer/speedometer cable. Perhaps I can replace that cable with a non-ABS cable. Any thought I appreciated.
