I had this problem with my 244 this summmer. Picked up a new taillight assembly from the junkyard ($7!!!, it looked new). The problem for me was corrosion/burning on the printed circuit board surface. I think I could have repaired it, but since I had a known-good circuit board from the old assembly, I swapped them.

Has this been progressively worse, or did it fail all at once? If progressively worse, I would suspect the circuit board. You can bring these back by cleaning the contacts with an eraser, and then maybe put some dielectric grease on to prevent future corrosion.
