I'm looking at a Volvo service manual and it shows an adjustable wrench holding the rack shaft and a slip joint pliers on the ball part. It says not to let the rack rotate or you risk damaging the pinion. The manual is for the CAM steering gear. The other kind is ZF. There should be a label on the car with codes for different equipment. CAM=2 ZF=3(according to Haynes) I hope someone who has actually taken one apart can help you with this.
