Actually, There is a black ground wire inside of each hinges that you can't see that provides the ground. The struts coincidentally provide a ground.

Only a moron would know this :) That's because when I replaced my tailgate wiring, I did it by removing the hinges. When I saw the broken wires, I thought, "how typical of Volvo that they would put safety straps in the hinges in case they break so the hinge doesn't come apart." Well, since I never saw a hinge come apart, I thought, "heck, I don't need these dang straps," and proceeded to cut them off.

Only after some similarly wierd tailgate occurrences did someone point out that these hinge wires provide a ground path, did I realize what I had done.
