Wagon tail lights- lower work, upper don't?? 700 1992

I just replaced my drivers side tail light lense with a replacement from IPD (not OEM) in my 740 wagon. I was very careful to replace all wires to original location. But now I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the upper tail/brake lights are not working. The lower tail/brake lights work just fine and the center brake lights work. Checked fuse, looked OK; rechecked connections all looked OK. The bulb was replaced on the (upper) driver's side today also, and (upper)passenger side looked OK. Any ideas/suggestions???

PS- Stopped by the local Volvo dealer today to pick up some parts for my 240, and checked out the new S60. Looks pretty nice!! But swoopy exterior takes away from useable interior space. For example the rear seat has NO leg room and the trunk is big but the opening to it is about the size of a suitcase. They wanted me to test drive and buy it- told them I was satisfied with my current stable, they said don't sell just add to (not mentioning the monthly payment I would acquire to achieve that status). They said they were selling at sticker for current time.
