Trim panel removal 200 86

tonight I learned not to presume the imtegrated mud flap starting with the 1986 model year took care of rust out behind the rear wheels.

My wagon has a real mess behing the mudflaps....lookes like the PO used to drive this thin in a rock quarry!

I took out three dustpan fulls of dirt and rock from EACH side....before I found the rust!

right where the pre-1986 bodies rust out

So, I need to remove that 8" tall plastictrim panel that extends from the mudflap back along the lower body, where it disappears under the bumber.

Looks like it has a large plastic fastener that should just pry out. But there is something inserted through it at a cross angle, thus preventing it from coming out.

What is the configuration here, and how do I remove this fastener for the trim panel?
