The aftermarket cats are not of the quality the oem Volvo ones are, but you can probably buy 6 or 7 for the same amount of dough. Do you live in a place where you will get in trouble for dropping it down and beating the guts out of it? Chances are if its loose it won't pass any sort of inspection other than visual anyway.

The tin sheilds around the downpipe are quite obvious if they are rattling- tap with your fist, and they rattle. They serve no great purpose other than keeping heat in so the converter warms up a bit quicker.
