Now What? 200 85

Here We go again,

Found the time to investigate my '85 245 intank pump/hose situation.I removed the third seat, unscrewed the access panel only to find a dangling corroded ground wire.Fixed that, blew away 15 years of rust/dirt/crud around the pump/sending unit cover.I think its rusted shut, it looks like if I try to turn it,it will just crumble.Power goes down there because when I disconnect the wire, my fuel guage drops to zero.I usually keep the tank full because I fear the sock/hose is deteriorated.Should I bother trying to get in there, or would this be opening up a can of worms?

Thanks for any input, Phil Stone '85 245GL 186K
