Re: 16 VALVE TICKING AND POOR WARM IDLE 900 1991

I have a similar problem with my '91 16-valve. The engine is a used replacement (long story) which had a lot of varnish and lots of hydraulic lifter noise during warm-up. I believe the noise is caused by deposits around the lifter(s) and the differential thermal expansion during warm-up causes them to bind and stick. I often heard the noise cycling which I attribute to the lifter rotating through a sticky spot. After trying different oils, engine flushes, and additives with little success I have almost completely cured the problem with a steady use of Mobil 1 and CD-2 oil detergent. Only an occasional tick now and then when restarting after it has partly cooled down. My suggestion is to only use synthetic Mobil 1 or Amsoil (Castrol Syntec did not help at all), and add extra detergent till the problem goes away.
