-Sounds suspiciously like the pinch roller is "barrelled". -Basically, the tape is 'weaving' off to one side of the head, and you're losing tape to head contact with one channel.

since the car is about 10 years old, I'd say it's normal for the rubber parts to need replacing anyway... -if you can get them, that is! -If you do decide to try to get a replacement (good luck!) then you might think about replacing any belts while you're at it. -The slipping clutch on the take-up hub may also be a little too slack... that could be more of a problem...
