Under-hood check "surprise"... 900 1995

I'd be very grateful if someone can answer this...

I recently changed the oil, filter & belts on my wife's 1995 940, and as I usually do, I gave the engine a good looking over when I'd finished, just looking for signs of impending trouble before I close the hood, -you know what I mean!

-Anyway, I noticed something I'd never seen before, and I can't identify the part in question... -pop quiz!!!

Towards the front of the engine, slightly to the left of center, near the top, (i.e. right in front of you as you peer in under the hood!) is a small, black plastic 'disc' shaped item, with a small, light coloured plastic tube coming out of the top, and leading off to the right...

The plastic disc is located near what looked at a glance to be the pipes going to the A/C condenser, but what caught my attention was that the part had been broken and amateurishly repaired, with silicone, where the plastic tube comes out of the top.

The car has -since new- been serviced at the local dealership with the exception of the last (60,000) service, when it went to a nearer, non-authorized Volvo specialist. -I have done all of the intermediate oil changes, and I've never noticed this "repair" before. -My instictive guess is that it happened at the last service, but I can't be certain that it hadn't happened previously, without me noticing. -Either way, I'm seriously annoyed if somebody carried out a shoddy 'quick-fix' to cover something that they damaged whilst under the hood.

-can anyone identify this part for me? (sorry about the lousy description, but I admit that I'm much more at home with VW's!!!

Thanks in advance,

Keith Andrews
