It's not really "buried": you can easily pull it out by hand from above, using the curved vacuum hose fitting on the top of the trap. Pull off the smaller vacuum line on the side, then just pull it up. Even with synthetic, you may find a little crud, but in all honesty, none of my cars have ever had a problem with a clogged flame trap. All use Mobil 1.

I changed my differential fluid at around 60k, replacing it with Mobil 1 85-90. There was no detectable wear in the old fluid and I plan to leave the synthetic in there for good.
