AMM Failure due to battery install 200 84

Gang,

Kids drive an 84 244 DL. Installed new/rebuilt AMM a month ago and the car ran like a dream. Last week car needed a new battery. After install I had to remove battery to replace the tray since Sears no longer had the group 24 battery with hold down tabs. Car sat for one night and when I used the car the next morning the AMM had failed. Car runs rich and smokes like a cigar.

Is there a specific proceedure to disconnect the battery in order to protect the AMM? Or did I just run into a cosmic event with the AMM failing? Might be a cosmic event since my neighbor had his AMM go on his 84 three days later.
