I have a 1986 740T. The seat is adjusted by moving the lever and moving the seat up or down in front or in back as required. It's a simple mechanical system so there is not much to it.
Look at the 700/900 Maintenance FAQ via the link below. It is culled from previous postings. There is a section on buying an older 700 and what needs to be checked. Pay attention to the relay resoldering info. They will fail and can leave you stranded. Don Foster is the relay resoldering king.
If you have black smoke under boost, it indicates a pressure leak. Check all hose clamps for thightness and breaks in the connecting hoses. Any hose breaks will not show up under vacuum but will leak air under boost. The FI system determins the amount of air needed and injects fuel accordingly. If some air leaks out, you have a rich mixture.
Please pay attention to the trouble spots and fix them asap. My car has the original oil 'cooled' turbo at 254,000 miles. I printed out the FAQ and put it in a binder. I am amazed at the size increase sine the last time I printed it out.
BTW, how's your engine wiring harness? Check the black wires where they connect to the intake manifold. If the insulation is comming off, you have the original harness, which is what we affectionatly call a biodegradable engine wiring harness. Mine had it, I replaced it. It can be rewired by you for about 20 bux.
