850 seats in a 164? 140-160

I put 850 seats in my 544 - they fit better than I expected and although I disconnected the side air bag, i could have saved it!

BTW - the seats mounts on a 544 are a bit high, but after I took the seat apart, I could lower the 850 frame about 3 inches.

I took the old seat out and ground the 4 mounting bosses off the 850 seat - then I had a local welding shop weld 2 3 inch straps of 1/2" aluminum plate to the seat frame.

I then made a platform out of 1/2" plywood that I bolted to the 544 seat mounts and positioned the modified 850 seat on the plywood and drilled mounting holes through the straps and plywood.

I then trimmed the plywood to get rid of excess material - the final result looked like a rounded H shape with a fat center crossbar. I am going to copy the plywood in 1/4" aluminum.

The driver's seat is electric - instead of wiring it, I put fused jumper wires on the side seat panel and I can connect it to the battery and adjust the seat. As I am the only one to drive the car, this is adequate for now.

BTW junk yards are supply and demand - smaller, newer seats may be even cheaper.

The best seats I found were gray cloth from a car that was still closed to the elements, most leather seats were very weather beaten. I wish that I took the back seat also as I have since found directions to narrow a back seat! I paid $100 each, and they are comfy.
