hot oil smell at rear wheel well 200 1988

1988 244DL

I have on several occasions after a 20 mile drive gotten out and smelled hot oil.
The smell is strongest at the rear driver's side wheel well

I checked the rear differential oil and it is just inside the lip. Maybe a bit low since the car was inclined slightly up to the front.

I had the rear differential oil changed by a "professional" once (never again), over a decade ago at 100k, and he overfilled the rear differential oil. I found out because it was pushing out the drive shaft seal. I let out the excess. I do not see any reason why it would now be causing a smell.

I have 170k on the car now. How often is the rear differential oil supposed to be changed?

Any ideas on the hot oil smell?
