"sitting for a few years" - how many?
I've had numerous cars that were parked for extended periods. 1st thing you might do is check for fuel pressure at the rail. The basics for me when a car's been "sitting for a few years"
- change the oil
- pull plugs. inspect; squirt some oil into the cylinders & crank
- change the fuel filter
- pull fuses, wire brush contacts w/ solvent
- pull intake manifold grounds, clean, reinstall w/ grease
- Pull fuel sender & pre-pump, inspect inside tank
I did an 87 for a friend ~2 years ago. Had been "sitting 7-8 years". I found
- Sender tube in gas tank was rusted away
- Tank was filled with scale and varnish. Replaced it.
- Fuel filter clogged with jelly
- Rubber hose from tank to main pump had holes
- Main fuel pump ran for a couple of hours and then froze.
- FPR bad
- all 4 Injectors clogged
- Ground wire from battery corroded off at block
- MAS bad
- Hose from MAS to intake had holes at bottom
- Throttle plate stuck closed
- Various other rodent- and corrosion-related problems
