Trailer selection for towing (moving 1 person's stuff) 700 1990

Will, My first trip towing a trailer with my 1987 740 non turbo was from Michigan to LA, up the PCH to san fran and back to Michigan via Mt. Rushmore. The trailer it enclosed and empty weight is around 800lbs. My Harley, snowboarding and backpacking/camping gear was in trailer and I estimate the gross weight was 2100lbs.
The second trip was a move from Michigan to west Texas, and again my Harley was on board along with my snap on tool chest and a lot more than I took to cali on my trip. When I moved back to Michigan from Texas I had the car and trailer full of stuff. It was kinda slow going because I had to drive with out using overdrive, the B230 with an auto trans did a very good job but just could not handle the weight, bucking the wind and the hills.
When I got back in Traverse City, Michigan I just had to know how much I was pulling so I went to a place that had a drive on scale. the total weight with me in the car was 7620lbs.
My 87,740 has 280K on it and not much has been done to it, The brakes have good rotors and the best lining that IPD had. There is two transmissions coolers (the radiator and one in front of the condenser) and I have never changed the fluid. I did put a new radiator in the car about two years before I went to Cali. The trailer wiring is from the local discount parts store,(Advance auto, Auto Zone) and converts the Volvo system to work the trailer lights with the combination stop/brake/turn on the trailer. I do have lowering springs and bilstein struts/shocks.
I do pull the same trailer some with my 1993,940 with a non turbo and auto transmission. It is about the same as my 87,740 but the 740 handles much better.
I did drive truck over the road for 16 years, so pulling a trailer is nothing new to me, and I am never I to much of a hurry to get anywhere.
I have been told that towing a heavy load with a turbo car you have to really watch the engine temp and not work it to hard, but if your car is stock I don't think it would over fuel and build a lot of engine heat like a diesel will.
When you get into hilly terrain take it easy and don't use overdrive and I think you will have a good of a move as I did.
Good luck and let us know how it went
Gene
