Inner tie rods? 200 1989

So, while the car is up with the wheels in the air?... Just pull each boot back and look for play... How much of a pain is it to replace these?... The tie rods themselves aren't too bad of a job, but I've never attempted the inners. I don't know much about what and how to replace them. Is a mandatory alignment needed? Do you need the outers off to get at the inners? Sorry for the noob-like questions.
