fuel/temp gauge mod 900

hi all,
thinking of wiring in a digital homemade (using an arduino board which costs about £20) fuel and temp gauge using lcd which will go next to cigarette lighter. We've been gauge the fuel by measuring resistance on two wires intercepted from the fuel pump and run under the carpet to an ohm meter in the front. Do you think it is safe to power our new gauge using 12V supply from cigarette lighter and passing voltage through potentiometer which is already in fuel tank in order to get a reading. This looks to be what happens anyway going by the wiring diagram in the haynes manual but I'd appreciate any second opinions or better ways of making this project a success. I've had a couple of goes looking for the offending break in the flexible board without much success and would be happy as larry with a 21st century fix i.e. digital readout in a range of colours. New wine and old skins?

regards
pierso
