This is an interesting situation. Based on the recent 82 242 turbo that appeared in the junk yard, we discovered that this car(which seemed to be owned from day one by a lady who LOVED this car)lost motor oil from a faulty oil pressure sender unit that had been lightly rubbing against some part of the car underneath. I figured this out when I went to go retrieve the 2-prong sender unit on the advice of board members when I extracted the delicious instrument cluster. Overall, the car was as MINT as I've ever seen with service records from the dealer since new! It had just a shade over 100K. Any way, my '89 has been weeping oil in this area despite having just changed all the seals with Volvo OEM seals. I'm pretty confident now, that 23 years of in service wear and just age has made this a critical item for me to attend to.
I personally think it's a great time for most 240 owners to simply replace the oil pressure sender unit as a routine maintenance item, especially if it's over 10 years old as a failure of such an inexpensive part can clearly be catastrophic in at least a couple of different ways.
I'll be calling the dealership tomorrow for my new one. I don't want to monkey around with anything less, and will NOT put anything Chinese in my car.
Take care all!
