1986 740 overheated-anything to look for? 700 1986

Hi,

When the needle is in the red, engine damage is occurring.

If the combustion gas starts exiting through the coolant reservoir or there is a cloud of white smoke when you start it up, you know that the cylinder head warped. Transverse warpage is measured in thousands of an inch. It doesn’t take much to destroy the gasket seal.

Fix the car and see how it runs, you‘ll know soon enough. But the next time, be sure that you stop and let it cool before it gets to the red!
