how to test a power steering pump - r/r while I replace radiator? 900

My P/S pump was making weird sounds and I posted here about it last week (see thread further down). Upon checking my radiator today, I pulled on the top hose and - voila - it came right off. Imagine my surprise! (searching the board I read that was a common defect). Luckily, I have another radiator.

Seeing that I already had the pump problem and I'll have the radiator out of the car, I'm thinking P/S pump could be more easily replaced. But, how to test it? Is there a test I can do on the bench or in the car?

thanks
