OD Solenoid- Direct Wiring -No relay? 200

Can I wire the solenoid for the Over Drive on an Automatic 1986 240 in a direct manner?

In other words, I want put a switch on the dash that turns the over-drive solenoid on or off instead of the one that is on the shifter stick. I want to eliminate the white OD relay. Will that drain the battery or am I good to go??

Or should I just use the new switch that I will install and use the white OD relay as the system calls for?

Thanks--my son needs to go back to school soon.
