possible Nivomat problem? 900 1992

My 1992 940GLE (192,000 km) has just developed a curious noise that seems to be coming from the passenger side rear suspension. When you first start driving there is a loud "banging" or "crashing" noise as you drive down the road. As you drive further the noise goes away. The next time you drive the car (after parking it for 3-4 hrs) the noise is back but once again, disappears after driving for awhile. I've looked underneath the car and nothing appears obviously amiss ... am I facing the dreaded Nivomat replacement?
