Idle high- distrib. changes make NO difference 200 1990

The idle on my 1990 240DL is high (no tach) but I know it's up there around 1200-1400 RPM.

I adjusted the idle screw to allow the butterfly to come all the way closed but no change. I rotated the distributor as far as it would go both ways and it makes no change at all but at one point the motor does quickly die. Seems like timing is not the issue.

Would some type of intake leak cause this high idle? Thanks for any help.
