How does a fuel pump work wo a fuse? 200 1993

I was changing the fuses on my '93 240 and I noticed that if I removed the fuse for the fuel pump that the car ran normally. I tested this by accelerating up to 40 mph, and all seemed well. How is this possible? I removed fuses 4 and 6, the 8 amp fuse for the fuel pump relay OR the 16 amp fuse for the external pump and O2 sensor, and the car ran fine (although I didn't test it if both were removed). Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
