Light does not go on when I open tailgate 900 1996

When I open my tailgate on my 1996 960 wagon, the light does not go on. I have had the car for almost two years and I believe it worked when I first got it. I can turn the light on manually. Do I have to replace a switch, or is there another solution (perhaps spraying the right area with contact cleaner)?
