Sudden multiple modes of car death? 200 1992

People of Brick--

My wagon has 222k, and until now the transmission has been AOK. I had it power flushed by a good garage 10k ago, and all was well.

Until leaving work today. After going about six blocks it started slipping and wouldn't shift to third. I stayed off the freeway and kept heading for home. Gradually it got better(!). After I got home I went out again on a short trip and it pulled and shifted perfectly.

Hmmmm. Tonight I went to the grocery and almost didn't get back up the hill to my house. In fact the car also shuddered when pulling away from a stop sign, as though something internal was about to break.

AND while I was heading for the store, "Check Engine" came on. I haven't checked that yet--but I can't imagine how the two would be connected.

AND that's not all. I've got a noise that sounds like an alternator bearing. I was able to contact the shop I use before they closed, and the owner said that the AW-70 has a pump that could make such a noise.

Does anyone know how to put all this together? Do I have a dying trans AND a dying alternator? I'll check the "Check" tomorrow morning and post a followup if it's newsworthy.

I looked in the FAQ and didn't see anything that shed light on the situation.

Thanks for any help you can give (suddenly I need a lot).

Doug Harvey
