When did Volvo begin to incorporate the electric plug-in on the top of the master cylinder reservoir? 700

Hello again!

My reservoir/Master brake cylinder to my 1988 740 sw non-turbo non-ABS, does not have the little electric plugin feature that is located on the top of my 1989 (same exact car as 88, just a 1989). My 89 has the plugin but my 1988 doesn't. Are these reservoirs interchangable? What is the primary function and or purpose for these electric plugin device?
