headlight switch positions mysteriously changed 200

Ever since I disconnected the headlight switch (i'm not even sure what for now it was so long ago) for my '86 240 the switch positions aren't the same.
From left to right there is now OFF, ON, and OFF again, whereas it should be
OFF, PARK, ON. As a result, the lights do not shut off with the key, a feature I'd like to have back.

I didn't do a search on this because it seemed like an oddball problem....

any thoughts would be welcomed.
