Is the Flame trap necessary?

I realize that there are some who believe the Volvo Engineers are gods ... but what does this little piece of plastic really do?

Especially if it has been relocated further from the oil seperator box by a relocation kit. Is it really stopping flames?

Has anyone left this out and just connected the hose elsewhere?
Good or bad results?

Thanks for the replies ... hope it is not as passionate as the oil or oil filter posts....
