I just bought a used 1990 Volvo 740 with 98K miles on it.
I took it out for a drive from NY to Philadelphia, and noticed that the odometer wasn't working. This continued for about 50 miles and then it magically started working again. I have no clue what happend. It worked throughout - and I thought that was the end of that problem. Turns out the same exact thing happened on the way back. About 50 miles passed before the odometer magically started working.
I just graduated college, and just got a job - not very high paying - and am not very big on expensive repairs. I did some googling to notice that the problem is probably with the gears that run the odometer. Is that the problem? Is it possible to personally change the gear in my Volvo? If not, how much am I looking at in damages, i.e., $$$.
Thanks for your help - this is bugging the heck out of me.
