front brake pad replacement 200 1988

I need to replace the front brake pads. The car has metal lines coming from the calipers to a bracket welded to the struts. From there on the lines are rubber.
Is it ok to gently pull caliper back, bending the metal lines enough to get to the pads? Is there a better way?
I noticed under the bracket there is a metallic loop and was wondering if that is removed, can a person detach the lines from the strut thereby making it a little easier to move the caliper off the rotor?
Thanks,
Greg
