well, it's urgent to me and mine.....
I was very proud of myself today. I got rid of an old rattle by attaching the exhaust to the transmission via the bracket introduced in 1992 (ok I'm behind). see my other recent posts about this TSB.
Well after that went well, I took my 9 month old for a ride in the country. About 1/2 hour out the brick started making a funny noise. Under load the car started making a high pitched whine and had a loss of power. I pulled over and opened the hood, but nothing was visibly amis and the car idled like normal.
However, it just got worse. The car would do ok on a flat surface, but as soon as I hit a hill it was aparrant that I had no power. I had to get my understanding wife to come pick me up. After the car had cooled down I removed the connection from the transmission to the exhaust, and the problem is still there.
I was trying to figure out how my earlier work could have done something. Did I foul up the exhaust and create backpressure? Did I damage the transmission?
Anyway, the high pitched whine is whenever I put a significant load on the engine. I got it to happen in park when I revved up to about 3500 RPMs. So I'm hoping that means that it's not the transmission. The whine seems to be coming from the engine, either from the area of the exhaust manifold or the valve cover. If was a little hard to tell there on the side of the road.
It idles fine, and the problem appears only under engine load. Does anyone have any ideas of things to try, before I have to get this towed? This is the worst week not to have my car.
AAAAGGGGHHHHHH......
