760 Turbo, smoke in exhaust 700

Hi all,

New to the forum and Volvos in general. I acquired a 1990 760 Turbo that I think has a blown head gasket. There is the distinct odor of anti-freeze in the exhaust and vapor is evident. Are head gasket failure or head failures common in this type engine? Can someone recommend the best method of approaching this? Would you pull the head and take it to a machine shop, put in a new long block, perhaps a used engine from a junkyard? Any advice on where to go from here would be most appreiciated! I ordered the chiltons manual from the bookstore today, 3-5 business days for delivery.

Regards,

Jerry
