Chirping for engine bay . . . 200

Hi guys - I've owned my 1988 240 (81,000 miles) about 8 months now and have been helped a lot by the board. I'm getting near when all the problems are being resolved, except this one . . . ever since I've bought the car I get what sounds like a jungle of chirping from under the hood, especially when it's wet or hot and humid outside. It's frustrating since I've heard some 240's that purr like a cat. My mechanic says he thinks the fanbelts are in need of replacing and that old Volvo belts do that. I'm not so sure . . . any thoughts about that or what it could be? Thanks, Fred
